Dicle University Faculty of Medicine Department of Urology

The Diyarbakır Faculty of Medicine, which was opened for education within Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1966, formed the foundation of today's Faculty of Medicine and of Dicle University. On 20 January 1969, the Faculty of Medicine transferred its students to Diyarbakır and began education in the building of the Numune (State) Hospital. The Faculty currently continues its education in the 1050-bed Training and Research hospital building constructed on the campus grounds. With its outpatient clinic, clinic, administrative section, classroom, laboratory, administrative blocks, etc., it has a total area of 192,000 m².

The Department began its work with faculty members who came on rotation from the Department of Urology of Ankara University Faculty of Medicine. The first to come was Prof. Dr. Yusuf Ziya Müftüoğlu. Following this short rotation, Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Türkeri was appointed as Head of the Department and continued for a long time. The active and modern urological practices that thus began have continued to develop up to the present day. Later, the headship of the Department was held by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ünal Sert and Asst. Prof. Dr. Orhan Öztürk. In 1994, Prof. Dr. M. Kamuran Bircan became Head of the Department and held this position until 2005. The position of Head of the Department was held by Prof. Dr. Hayrettin Şahin between 2005 and 2009, by Prof. Dr. Abdullah Gedik between 2009 and 2012, and by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yaşar BOZKURT between 2012 and 2016. Since January 2017, the Head of the Department is Prof. Dr. M. Kamuran Bircan.

The Department of Urology provides services with 34 beds on the 1st floor of our hospital. Affiliated with our clinic, there are an actively operating lithotripsy (stone-breaking) unit, a urodynamics unit, an abdominal and transrectal ultrasonography device and an X-ray unit. With these facilities, it is the most advanced Urology clinic in the region. Studies covering all urological pathologies from the newborn age group onward are carried out.
