Department of Internal Medicine — History
The Department of Internal Medicine of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine was established in 1969 by Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlhami Nasuhioğlu, Specialist Dr. Sıtkı Göral and Specialist Dr. Nedim Çobanoğlu, and began to provide education and health services. The first specialty residents of the Department of Internal Medicine were Dr. Ahmet Taştekin, Dr. M. Salih Yıldırım, Dr. Halil Değertekin, Dr. Vedat Karaduman, Dr. Eyüp Durmuş and Dr. Aykut Meriç; the number of internal medicine specialist physicians who have graduated after receiving specialty training within the Department from its establishment to the present has exceeded 500. It has more than 100 faculty members holding academic titles whom it has contributed to the country as a whole. With the arrival of Prof. Dr. Orhan Ekrem Müftüoğlu in 1982, our Department, which developed rapidly in every field, carried out education and training, academic research, book printing and publishing, and patient diagnosis and treatment services under the management of Mr. Müftüoğlu for more than 30 years. From 2010, when Prof. Dr. Ekrem Müftüoğlu retired, until 2018, the headship of the Department was held by Prof. Dr. M. Emin Yılmaz. From 2018 to the present, the headship of the Department is held by Prof. Dr. M. Orhan Ayyıldız.
Our Department of Internal Medicine, established within Dicle University Faculty of Medicine, provides education-training, research-development and patient care and treatment services in the fields of the divisions of Hematology, Nephrology, Gastroenterohepatology, Endocrinology, Medical Oncology, Adult Intensive Care and General Internal Medicine. In addition, the Divisions of Geriatrics, Immunology and Rheumatology have been established but have not yet actually become operational. Every year, articles are published by the department's faculty in numerous domestic and international journals and books.
Apart from the fields of education-training and research-development, with the 15 outpatient clinics it houses and the 10 clinical–intensive care wards with a bed capacity of up to 250, it constitutes the largest internal medicine department of the region.
Our Services
Hematology Division: It provides services with 2 wards with a total of 42 beds and 2 outpatient clinics reaching 200 patients per day, a stem cell transplantation center, a long-established apheresis unit, and—in addition to routine hematological tests, peripheral smear, bone marrow staining, and routine and molecular genetic methods related to coagulation, thrombosis and leukemias in the field of hematology—a tissue typing Laboratory certified and approved by the Ministry of Health that serves the entire region. In addition, it continues to provide patient care and treatment services with an outpatient chemotherapy administration unit.
Gastroenterohepatology Division: It provides services with 2 wards with 40 beds, 2 routine outpatient clinics exceeding 200 patients per day, as well as an Endoscopy unit that visualizes all the upper and lower gastrointestinal and biliary tracts and performs all the procedures required by modern medicine such as ERCP, EMR and ESR, and a percutaneous hepatobiliary intervention room. In addition, the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of liver transplant patients are carried out.
Nephrology Division: It serves the patients of our region with a 25-bed Nephrology clinic, a hemodialysis unit, Peritoneal dialysis, a nephrology laboratory, diagnosis by Kidney Biopsy, and a Kidney transplantation unit.
Endocrinology: It serves our patients with a 20-bed Endocrinology clinic, 3 outpatient clinics, a Thyroid ultrasound and biopsy-intervention unit, and a Diabetic foot outpatient clinic.
Medical Oncology: It has served for years as the largest cancer center in our region, with 2 clinics with 40 beds, 1 intensive care unit, 5 outpatient clinics and a Modern robotic Chemotherapy Center. In addition, we have a Cancer Research and Application center managed by our clinic's physicians.
Adult Intensive Care: In our 10-bed general internal medicine intensive care unit, we have 1 Associate Professor and 1 subspecialty fellow. Our tertiary-level ICU serves our region as a fully equipped clinic in every respect.
General Internal Medicine: It is our division with 2 faculty members serving general internal medicine patients with a 10-bed Clinic and 1 Outpatient clinic service
In Our Department of Internal Medicine
- To organize theoretical and practical courses for Term 3, 4 and 6 students of the Faculty of Medicine,
- To organize practical courses for the students of the Faculty of Dentistry and the School of Nursing,
- To carry out education programs—updated every year—for the training of Internal Medicine and subspecialty residents, every weekday morning between 08:00 and 08:45 and with case discussions at midday on 2 weekdays,
- To conduct research of a quality that contributes to practical application and can be published in high-level national and international congresses and journals; to organize high-level national and international congresses and symposia; and to participate in congresses and symposia,
- To organize courses to train domestic medical personnel through national programs (dialysis certification, training personnel for laboratories (Hematology, HLA tissue lab)),
- It is aimed to provide healthcare services to our patients using world-standard technology and knowledge equipment.
