The Department of Anatomy of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine was first established in 1969 under the name "Chair of Anatomy", together with the foundation of the Faculty of Medicine. In the early years, courses were taught by visiting faculty members such as Prof. Dr. Kaplan ARINCI and Prof. Dr. Yaşar KUYUCU. The first Head of the Chair of Anatomy was Prof. Dr. Turgut VARDAR. The first research assistants of the Chair were Ahmet ÇİMEN, Tahir HATİPOĞLU and Ramazan DEMİR.

After Prof. Dr. Turgut VARDAR left, the chairmanship was assumed by Prof. Dr. Asım DUMAN, one of the faculty members of Surgery. During this period, H. Basri TURGUT, E. Savaş HATİPOĞLU and Şükrü DOĞRUYOL became research assistants. With the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) laws enacted in 1982, the chairs at universities were abolished and the unit was restructured as the Department of Morphology. This department comprised the Divisions of Anatomy and Histology-Embryology. Prof. Dr. İbrahim AYKAÇ served as the head of the Department of Morphology.

When Prof. Dr. İbrahim AYKAÇ retired, Prof. Dr. H. Basri TURGUT was appointed as the Head of the Department. After a while, with a legal amendment, the Department of Anatomy was re-established. During this process, Ayda DEMİRANT, Mustafa USBEKANOĞLU, Orhan TACAR, Vatan KAVAK and M. Cudi TUNCER joined the Department as research assistants. When Prof. Dr. H. Basri TURGUT left our university in 1994, Prof. Dr. E. Savaş HATİPOĞLU was appointed as the Head of the Department. During this period, many research assistants joined through the Medical Specialty Examination (TUS); among them, Dr. Piraye KERVANCIOĞLU and Dr. Özlen KARABULUT completed their specialty training in the Department of Anatomy.

As of 25.05.2015, Prof. Dr. M. Cudi TUNCER was appointed as the Head of the Department and still continues to hold this position.
