Our department was established on 8 July 1995 within the Division of Internal Medical Sciences. The Department of Family Medicine, which admitted its first resident through the April 1995 Medical Specialty Examination (TUS), had Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nizamettin TOPRAK as its first Head of Department. Between 1997 and 2001 the headship of the Department was held by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin YILMAZ, and between 2001 and January 2009 by Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Hamdi KARA. The headship of the Department is currently held by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tahsin ÇELEPKOLU. Our Department currently has 4 faculty members.

Department Mission

To provide comprehensive and continuous health care to the person seeking medical care, independent of age, sex and disease. To serve in the context of their own family, community and culture while also respecting the patients' decisions, and to develop their abilities and values in order to provide effective and safe health care. To provide residents, research assistants and interns with comprehensive and multifaceted training that will enable them to cope with every kind of patient and/or problem they will encounter in the primary health care institutions where they will work in the future. To conduct research and applications in such a way that they are planned in line with the needs of our country and the health sector and offer solution proposals.

Department Vision

To be the first point of contact regarding the university health system; to provide care that is open and unlimited in access, easily accessible geographically, economically and culturally, independent of age, sex or any other characteristic of the person, integrated (preventive, curative and rehabilitative), coordinated (consultation, referral, follow-up), continuous (from preconception to death), holistic (physical, psychological, social), personal (individual-centered), comprehensive, and family- and community-oriented; and to be close to the individual and protect confidentiality. To be at their side in all health matters and in their relationships with other health-care providers, and while doing so, to provide a team service that uses health resources effectively.
