DICLE UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF MEDICINE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY
History
The Department of Physiology of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine was established under the name 'Chair of Physiology' as a result of the transfer to Diyarbakır of our students who were studying within Ankara University Faculty of Medicine during the 1968-1969 academic year. Initially, for a period of nearly ten years, physiology courses were taught by the esteemed faculty members of the Chair of Physiology of Ankara University Faculty of Medicine. Until the Department of Physiology of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine formed its own academic staff, physiology courses were taught by rotating visiting faculty members and the clinical faculty members of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine. From its foundation until 1982, the position of Head of the Chair of Physiology was held by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of each period. Pursuant to Law No. 2547 of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), which came into force in 1982, the term 'Chair' was replaced by 'Department' in the Faculties of Medicine.
The first faculty member of the Department of Physiology of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine, Vet. Med. M. Orhan DENLİ, was appointed to the position of Assistant Professor in 1982 and served as Head of the Department until 2000. During this process, Prof. Dr. M. Orhan DENLİ carried out the educational, academic and administrative affairs of the department and made great contributions to the formation of the academic staff. Prof. Dr. Abdurrahman ŞERMET, who was appointed to the Department of Physiology as an Assistant Professor in 1989, served as Head of the Department between 2000 and 2020. In addition to the faculty members who make up the current academic staff of our department, many faculty members who have served in some faculties of our university and in various universities of our country were trained here.
General Introduction
What is Physiology? Its Importance in Medical Education
Physiology is the logic of life. Starting from the molecular/cellular level up to tissues, organ systems and the entire organism, it studies and investigates the function of living structures and how they work by integrating anatomy, histology, biochemistry and the biological sciences.
In medical education, physiology provides the link between the basic sciences and the clinical sciences. A good knowledge of physiology is indispensable for physicians in order to achieve correct and accurate clinical approaches.
Objectives
The academic objective of the Department of Physiology is to conduct research on functions at all levels of the organism, to examine how the mechanisms that enable the organism to adapt to changing internal and external conditions work, and to support undergraduate and graduate education and training activities.
Organization
The Department of Physiology is located in the main building of the Faculty of Medicine, on the university campus on the opposite bank of the Tigris River.
The number of academic staff in the department is 8, and the number of administrative staff is 1. In addition, there are 2 medical specialty (residency) students, 7 doctoral students and 1 master's student.
Physiology teaching is carried out in the student laboratory near the theoretical classrooms and in the research laboratories located in the department. These are the exercise physiology laboratory, the electrogastrography laboratory and the general research laboratory.
The faculty members of the Department of Physiology teach the theoretical and practical physiology courses for the students of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Department of Nursing and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics within the Faculty of Health Sciences, as well as for the students receiving graduate education within the Institute of Health Sciences.
