Department of Public Health
Our department was established in 1969 as the "Department of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine." After the appointment of Prof. Dr. Özdemir Gülesen in 1970, it was renamed as the "Department of Public Health" in 1972. Eighteen public health specialists, who worked in various institutions in our country, received their specialization training from our department. Additionally, six individuals completed their doctorates in public health, and eight individuals completed their master's degrees.
In 1979, Prof. Dr. Ersen İlçin, who was the head of the department, retired. Prof. Dr. Perran Toksöz assumed the position of department head in 2007. Currently, Prof. Dr. Günay Saka is serving as the head of the department.
The mission of our department is to graduate general practitioners equipped with knowledge and skills in public health philosophy and practices from Dicle University Faculty of Medicine. We aim to train specialists (in Medical Specialization, MSc, PhD) who are familiar with the community and the region in public health and related fields, who are knowledgeable about health problems, and can propose solutions. We also strive to contribute to improving the health level and quality of life of the community, as well as advancing public health science in Turkey.
Fields of Work and Scientific Activities
The Department of Public Health is managed by academic and administrative staff members at Dicle University. Public health courses are offered at the Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, Institute of Health Sciences, and Faculty of Dentistry.
Research and Development
In our department, research and studies are conducted as part of the Medical Specialization, Master's, and Doctoral programs. The results of these researches are presented as papers at national and international scientific meetings and published as articles in scientific journals. Additionally, we provide consultancy during the planning, implementation, and analysis stages of thesis projects and research conducted within the university.
Application and Service
Our department actively participates in the technical and educational activities of regional organizations of ministries such as the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Labor, and Ministry of Tourism. We also offer technical consultancy and prepare reports on relevant subjects.
Our department's members directly participate in regional and national disaster and epidemic response teams. Furthermore, we are regarded as the primary point of contact for various public institutions, professional organizations, and NGOs in Diyarbakır concerning public health issues. The expertise of our department's academic staff is sought through our University Rectorate.
Mission
Our mission is to graduate general practitioners from Dicle University Faculty of Medicine equipped with knowledge and skills in the philosophy and applications of public health. We aim to train specialists (in Medical Specialization, MSc, PhD) who can understand and identify the community and the region in public health and related fields, are knowledgeable about health problems, and can propose solutions. We strive to participate in activities aimed at improving the health level and quality of life of the community and contribute to the development of public health science in Turkey.
Vision
Our vision is to be an effective institution in public health education and fieldwork at regional, national, and international levels.
