Department of Chest Diseases
Dicle University Faculty of Medicine was established as a branch of Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in the academic year 1966-67. In 1969, Dicle University Faculty of Medicine was relocated to Diyarbakır. In 1970, the Pulmonary Diseases department began providing specialized training with the enrollment of 5 residents. The training was initiated by Prof. Dr. Selahattin YAZICIOĞLU, who also served as the chief physician of the hospital, and retired Senior Colonel Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kemal BALCI from GATA (Gülhane Military Medical Academy).
Until 1981, the specialization training in Pulmonary Diseases was carried out at Diyarbakır Pulmonary Diseases Hospital. In 1981, with the inauguration of the new training and research hospital, the Pulmonary Diseases Department of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine (DUFF) moved to the campus. In 1982, Prof. Dr. Selahattin YAZICIOĞLU retired. From 1988 to 1992, Prof. Dr. Recep IŞIK served as the head of the Pulmonary Diseases Department. In 1992, the Pulmonary Diseases Department separated from the Internal Medicine Department and became an independent department. From 1992 to 2004, Prof. Dr. Mehmet COŞKUNSEL served as the department head. Since 2004, Prof. Dr. Füsun TOPÇU held the position of department head, and currently, Prof. Dr. Gökhan KIRBAŞ is serving as the head of the department.
As of 2010, the education and training activities in the Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis Department are carried out by 10 faculty members. The department has a total capacity of 55 beds, including 8 specific tuberculosis beds, 4 sleep disorder beds, 9 intensive care unit beds, and 34 other beds.
Within our department, we have the following facilities:
- Video fiber-optic bronchoscopy unit
- Respiratory function laboratory
- Thorax ultrasound and pleural procedures room
- Respiratory intensive care unit (established in 2006, providing service with 9 intensive care beds)
- Sleep disorders center (established in 2004 with 4 beds, currently offering active service with 2 beds)
- Pulmonary Diseases and TB outpatient clinic
- Smoking cessation clinic.
We provide outpatient clinic services to an average of 50 patients daily.
