Department of Biology
GENERAL INFORMATION
The department was established in 1974 and merged with the Genetics Department under the department of Medical Biology which currently encompasses both Medical Biology and Medical Genetics.
In the genetic diagnosis laboratory, there are Prenatal Diagnosis and Cytogenetics Laboratory and Molecular Diagnosis and Molecular Genetics Laboratory. Prenatal and Postnatal diagnosis and monitoring of hereditary diseases are performed in the Genetic Diagnosis Laboratory of the Department.
In our center, diagnostic analyses are performed using cytogenetic, molecular cytogenetic and molecular genetic methods. Thus, chromosomal diseases, some single gene diseases, congenital anomalies, multifactorial diseases and various syndromes are diagnosed. Based on this diagnosis, genetic counseling is provided with information on the possible course of hereditary diseases, risks of recurrence, and risks for subsequent pregnancies, as well as the possibilities for prenatal diagnosis.
