DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
History
Department of Philosophy was established within the Faculty of Science and Letters in 1996 and had its first graduates in 2000. With the establishment of the Faculty of Letters as a separate unit in 2009, it continues its education and training activities.
Our department includes three sub-departments: History of Philosophy, Systematic Philosophy and Logic, and Turkish-Islamic Thought.
The Department of History of Philosophy plans its courses in a way that traces philosophy and science to the Greeks from the Mesopotamian public who is the Chaldeans, from the Greeks to Rome, to the Islamic civilization, to the Christian civilization and finally to the Modern times. While planning the lessons in this way, the content of the nature, content and acquis of the philosophical-scientific activities in Chinese and Indian civilizations is associated with the narrative of the history of philosophy. Thus, when discussing the narrative of the history of philosophy in the historical course of philosophical accumulation, it can be summarized around two agendas in terms of its topics and issues. In the first one, the transformations of philosophy from its inception to the present day, prominent philosophers, doctrines, schools and institutions are followed through various and selected texts. In the second, the interactions between philosophy and science, philosophy and religion, and philosophy and culture are explored, with a particular emphasis on contemporary philosophical studies by referring to their conceptual background. In this context, it aims to discuss and learn how to follow a philosophical issue and narrative in the history of philosophy or how the history of philosophy should be read.
The goals of the Department of Systematic Philosophy and Logic are to transfer logic to students at academic levels, to prepare students who want to teach for the high school-philosophy group curriculum, to introduce the principles of critical thinking by providing students with philosophical thinking skills and language awareness, and to help them learn philosophy. For this purpose, lectures and seminars in the fields of Classical-Modern Logic, Epistemology, Philosophy and History of Science, Ethics, Ontology, Philosophy of Human Philosophy, Philosophy of Culture, Philosophy of Values, Technology, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of History are the primary research and teaching subjects.
The Department of Turkish-Islamic Thought aims to examine in detail the histories/periodizations, topics, and issues of the main intellectual traditions of the history of Islamic thought, as such kalām, israq, tasawwuf and especially "philosophy", from the classical periods to the Ottoman period and from there to Contemporary Islamic-Turkish Thought, together with their representatives in lectures and seminars. Within this framework, the courses such as Philosophy and Science in Islamic Civilization, Philosophy of Religion, History of Science, Islamic Philosophy, Contemporary Philosophy in Turkey, and Contemporary Islamic-Turkish Thought are given importance to increase students' interest and knowledge in Turkish-Islamic thought.
