Department of Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literatures

DEPARTMENT OF CONTEMPORARY TURKIC DIALECTS AND LITERATURES

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the new independent states of Turkic origin were established in Central Asia. Turkic and related communities within the Russian Federation were also shaped into autonomous regions. The formation of new global balances directly affected our country. As relations were being shaped with the countries with which we have ethnic, historical, and cultural ties, a need arose for a new workforce. For this purpose, the Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literatures departments were established at many universities. Our department is one of the oldest departments among the Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literatures departments in Türkiye.

The aim of our department’s establishment is to educate experts who are knowledgeable about language, literature, culture, history, and political developments related to Turkic-speaking states and related communities, especially in Central Asia, as well as in countries such as the Russian Federation, Eastern Europe, China, and Iran.

In our department, students are provided with in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of topics related to Turkic languages and literatures, and they are encouraged to develop a conscious approach towards Turkic culture.

The graduates of our department can find jobs as Turkish language and culture experts in TRT (Türkiye Radio and Television Corporation) or other visual and written media organizations, as well as in private companies specializing in the languages they have studied. They also have the opportunity to work in the tourism sector and in language teaching institutions and can work as translators. If they meet the necessary pedagogical qualifications, our graduates can also work as Turkish Language and Literature teachers in formal education institutions.

History

The Department of Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literatures was established in the Faculty of Science and Letters at Dicle University in 1996 and 1997 by Professor Halil Hoşgören and began accepting students in the same year. Currently, Associate Professor Abdulsamet Özmen is in the position of department chair. The department is currently staffed by 2 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor, 1 lecturer, and 4 research assistants.

Mission

Despite being nourished from a common culture; historical, political, geographical, and socio-cultural factors have created some differences in the languages, literatures, and cultures of Turkic peoples. The mission of our department is to fully understand the changes in the languages, literatures, and cultures of Turkic peoples spread over a wide geography from Central Asia to Eastern Europe, from Siberia to Tibet; from past to present, and to train expert scientists and educators who are proficient in common national and cultural values.

Vision

To become a department that is proudly recognized in our country and in the Turkic world, which makes serious contributions to its field through the education and knowledge it provides.
