TARA ’25 Symposium (3rd International Sociolinguistics Research Symposium)
Organised collaboratively by Dicle University’s
Ziya Gökalp Faculty of Education and Sezai Karakoç Faculty of Letters, TARA ’25
(the 3rd International Sociolinguistics Research Symposium) brought together
researchers from different disciplines by opening up for discussion - through a
sociolinguistic lens - the social dynamics of language and its role in social
interaction. The symposium was held in a hybrid format (in-person + online): it
began with online sessions on 29 October 2025 and continued with in-person
sessions on 30–31 October 2025.
Hosted at Dicle University’s 15 July Culture
and Congress Center (Diyarbakır), the symposium featured keynote speeches by
distinguished invited speakers. Prof. Dr. Cem Balçıkanlı (Gazi University)
addressed the impact of teacher mindset (fixed vs. growth) on students’
motivation and achievement. Prof. Dr. Süer Eker (Başkent University) examined
how social factors such as identity, class, age, gender, and education shape
language use. Finally, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ibrar Bhatt (Queen’s University
Belfast, UK) discussed how an Islamic worldview informs language, literacy, and
policy practices within the framework of the “Sociolinguistics of Islam”
approach.
Covering a broad range of themes - including
bilingualism/multilingualism; digital language and society; artificial
intelligence and language use; inclusivity; language and (im)politeness;
language variety and change; language attitudes and ideologies; language–identity
relations; language and education; conversation/discourse analysis; and
language policy and planning - the symposium hosted a total of 66 paper
presentations.
The symposium concluded with a closing
reception and a visit to Zerzevan Castle.
