WHAT IS ORTHODONTICS?
The word orthodontics is derived from the Greek words ortho "smooth" and odons "tooth". Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the proper placement of teeth on the alveolar crests and the diagnosis and treatment of facial irregularities.
WHY ORTHODONTICS?
Genetic and environmental factors have an effect on the formation of orthodontic disorders. Habits such as premature or late milk tooth extraction, mouth breathing, thumb sucking, wrong swallowing, teeth clenching and grinding habits, cheek biting, lip biting can cause bad closure called "malocclusion". Individuals may have different malocclusions, malocclusions that are common in our society;
1. Crowding: Crowding may occur due to conditions such as early milk tooth extraction, genetically small jaw and large teeth. They are common malocclusions in our society.
2. Missing teeth: It is a common disorder. Tooth extraction can be seen for reasons such as caries and trauma, as well as congenital tooth deficiency.
3. Diastema: It is the presence of spaces between the teeth. It is seen in individuals with missing teeth or having teeth that are smaller than they should be.
4. Open Closure: It is the gap between the front or side teeth when the teeth are closed.
5. Deep Closure: When the teeth are closed, the upper front teeth cover the lower front teeth excessively.
6.Cross closure: In at least one tooth, the upper tooth is positioned more inward than the lower tooth.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD I BROUGHT MY CHILD TO THE ORTHODONTIC EXAMINATION?
It is beneficial to have the child's first orthodontic examination at the age of 7-8, after the lower and upper front teeth erupt. During this period, problems with the development of the jaws and permanent teeth may be noticed. With early diagnosis, skeletal disorders that are difficult to treat in the future can be easily treated and conditions that require tooth extraction can be prevented.
CAN ADULT PATIENTS SEE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
Orthodontic treatments can be applied to individuals of all ages who want to have a healthy and beautiful smile. Today, nearly 25% of orthodontic patients are adult patients.
HOW LONG DO THE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENTS TAKE?
Depending on the shape and severity of the orthodontic disorder, the age and compliance of the patient, it may take 6 months-3 years or longer.
DO WIRES ROOT TEETH?
Orthodontic treatments do not have a tooth decaying effect. Only the accumulation of food residues is easier. That's why tooth brushing is an essential part of orthodontic treatment.
AFTER THE TREATMENT IS FINISHED, DO THE TEETH GO AGAIN?
After the braces are removed, the teeth want to return to their previous positions. Fixed (retainer) or mobile (SX Plate, Hawley appliance) are used to hold the teeth in their current position.
IS IT NEEDED FOR TREATMENT?
Deciding on tooth extraction is based on the amount of crowding in the lower and upper jaws, the growth pattern of the lower and upper jaws, and the patient's facial profile. Tooth extraction may be required for an orthodontic treatment where the result will be more stable.
WHAT ARE EMERGENCIES IN ORTHODONTICS?
Emergency situations are rare in orthodontics. It is normal for the patient to feel discomfort when the wires are newly inserted. Some patients may need to use a pain reliever recommended by the orthodontist.
TREATMENT SERVICES APPLIED IN OUR CLINIC OF ORTHODONTICS
1. TREATMENTS WITH MOVABLE DEVICES
Removable devices generally include treatments for mild disorders involving a single jaw or single tooth, or for the elimination of bad habits.
2. FIXED TREATMENTS
These are the most common treatments we do in our clinic. Brackets are attached to the teeth and the braces are placed and force is applied to the teeth and the teeth move smoothly.
3. FUNCTIONAL TREATMENTS
These are treatments that are performed especially during periods of maximum growth and development, with movable and fixed appliances to idealize the positions of teeth and jaws.
4. CLEAR LIP AND PALATE TREATMENTS
They are disorders that occur due to the inability of the structures in the upper jaw and lip area of the baby to unite in the first 8 weeks in the womb. In order for the first surgery and rhinoplasty to be successful, "nasoalveolar shaping" is applied to these babies as soon as they are born.
5. PREPARATION FOR ORTHOGNATIC SURGERY
In cases where orthodontic disorder is very severe, sometimes only orthodontic treatment is not enough. In these cases, with the help of surgery applied in addition to orthodontic treatment, chewing and speech are improved, and the jaw and face are provided with an ideal position.
