Departments - Oral And Maxillofacial Radiology

Oral, dental and maxillofacial radiology is the branch of dentistry that clinically and radiologically examines the structures of all oral and maxillofacial soft and hard tissues such as mouth, teeth and jaw, determines physiological (normal) and pathological (non-normal) conditions and plans their treatment. / or when an abnormal situation is encountered in your head and neck region, it is the duty of the radiology department to detect it, to examine and diagnose by taking a biopsy (sample) when necessary. ) detecting soft (gingival, lip, cheek, etc.) or hard tissue (bone, etc.) pathologies detected by x-rays and determining the appropriate treatment are also evaluated within the branch of radiology. X-ray is very important for the dentist's diagnosis and treatment planning. An invisible fracture, lesion, cyst or similar anomalies in the mouth can only be detected by x-ray. For this reason, it is necessary to evaluate the examination as a whole and to perform both intraoral and radiological examinations together. Radiology department is also known as the place where the first examination of the patient is made.

Dental Films (Dental Radiography)

Dental radiographs, that is, dental films, are the most helpful in the diagnosis of intraoral diseases, especially those related to hard tissue such as teeth and jawbones. The two most used types of dental films are; periapical (small, showing 2-3 teeth) and panoramic (large, showing all upper and lower teeth and jawbones). Digital radiography devices, which is a computer-aided technique, also allow detailed evaluation by allowing color and light changes on the film image with very low radiation dose. In addition to these, MR and CT are also films that can be requested, especially in implant applications and in the diagnosis of joint diseases.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Oral Diseases

With all these methods, only 1/3 of the tooth structure can be seen in the mouth, the remaining 2/3, inflammatory formations in the jawbone and structures such as impacted teeth can be easily seen and diagnosed. A good diagnosis enables the right treatment planning to be made. In this way, all necessary treatment needs are determined early and larger problems are prevented in the future.

In the Oral Diagnosis and Radiology department, after the first records of the patients are taken, their examinations are carried out in detail. Then, one or more of the dental films are taken in accordance with the treatment needs, and the treatment plan is determined. In accordance with the treatment planning, patients are directed to specialist physicians and their treatment is initiated. It is the duty of our department to answer all questions of patients about the treatment plan and duration. Personal and medical information in the patient file is never shared with third parties, as per our privacy policy.

Importance of First Examination and Correct Diagnosis

In the first examination of the patients who apply, it is learned whether they have systemic diseases, a healthy anamnesis (medical history) and the illnesses they have had. The first examination is an important issue that should be taken seriously in order that our patients with systemic diseases do not encounter any health problems during their treatment. In line with the information received during this examination, treatment planning and drugs to be used are selected in accordance with the health status of our patients. Treatment planning, diversity, advantages and disadvantages are explained in detail to our patients. Treatments initiated by making a detailed examination and treatment plan leading to correct diagnoses are concluded successfully and are long-lasting; Thus, health, time and economic losses are avoided.

In our faculty, treatment plans are created as a result of radiographic and oral evaluations of our patients by using the most advanced technology (intraoral cameras, laser, dental volumetric tomography, rvg, phosphorus plaque imaging systems, etc.) required for diagnosis. The I-CAT 3G Dental Volumetric Tomography device used in our radiology clinic is a state-of-the-art device used for radiological imaging. The devices used are not only in the field of dentistry, but also have the capacity and competence to respond to the demands of Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists, Eye Specialists and Plastic Surgery Specialists for consultation purposes. There is a digital network and a patient follow-up program so that the radiographs taken in the radiology clinic can be monitored in the clinics of our faculty.

Panoramic Film: It is a film shooting technique in which the teeth in the upper and lower jaws, adjacent tissues and formations and sinuses can be viewed on a single film. Routine is drawn for each of our patients.

Periapical film: It is a type of small film in which the closest and detailed image of the tooth whose radiological image is taken is obtained. Bite-Wing Film (Biting radiography): It is especially useful in the diagnosis of interface caries formed between adjacent teeth.
