Western
Languages and Literature Career Meeting II Successfully Held
The
second edition of the Western Languages and Literature Career Meeting took
place at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Conference Hall
on 6 May 2025, offering students valuable insights into diverse career paths.
The
event began with a presentation by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selen TEKALP, who shared
her personal experiences with the YLSY scholarship program. TEKALP discussed
the eligibility criteria fort he program, the opportunities provided by the
scholarship, and also touched on TÜBİTAK and other foreign government-funded
scholarships programs.
The
program continued with Yeşim Fidan EKREN’s presentation on national and
international exams. EKREN spoke about the essential language proficiency exams
that students and graduates need to take, as well as the career potential in
becoming a professional language exam instructor. She emphasized the importance
of assessing all four core language skills as reading, writing, listening, and
speaking in these exams, highlighting that comprehensive evaluation of these
skills is crucial for determining overall language proficiency.
Next,
Gülda KARATAŞ delivered her presentation on teaching abroad, sharing her
personal journey of working in both public and private schools in Sweden.
KARATAŞ underscored the advantages of continuously developing oneself,
acquiring additional language learning skills, and gaining teaching experience
even during university years. She also announced exciting news about her
upcoming move to work as a teacher in the United Kingdom.
In
the final session, Tuğçe SİN, a graduate of Hacettepe University’s Department
of Translation and Interpreting, shared her professional experiences in
interpreting. She discussed the differences between interpreting and
translation, the impact of artificial intelligence on the industry, various
types of interpreting, and the financial aspects of the profession. SİN
enriched the session by sharing her early experiences working with high-level
institutions, such as ministries, even during her student years.
Throughout
the event, interactive Q&A sessions between the presentations kept the
discussions dynamic and engaging. By the end of the meeting, students left with
a wealth of knowledge and practical guidance on employment opportunities after
graduation and valuable insights into how to prepare during their university
years.
