Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation

Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation

The Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation was established in 2004. The main focus areas of the department encompass agricultural engineering fields such as agricultural structures, irrigation, drainage, hydrology, environment, drought, water quality, climate change, and the utilization of wastewater in agriculture. Additionally, the department is actively engaged in research and education activities directly related to agricultural production in the Southeastern Anatolia Region and throughout the country.

The fundamental goal of the department is to apply emerging and developing engineering technologies in our focus areas, particularly to address the challenges of plant irrigation, which is a significant issue in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. The aim is to solve irrigation-related problems, enhance productivity through modern irrigation techniques and technologies, and reduce negative impacts on the environment. Research activities in these specific areas are ongoing.

Graduates of the department hold the title of Agricultural Engineer and have a wide range of career opportunities, including positions within governmental institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, State Hydraulic Works, Municipalities, Ministry of Environment, Irrigation Unions, and Private Irrigation Companies.

Currently, the department has 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, and 1 Research Assistant. Due to insufficient staff and faculty, undergraduate education is not offered by the department. However, as part of the faculty curriculum, compulsory shared-service courses (Meteorology, Measurement Knowledge, Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, Drainage and Water Quality, Irrigation Techniques, Fertigation, Effects of Climate Change on Agriculture) are taught at the associate, undergraduate, and graduate levels.

Furthermore, department faculty members have been actively involved as instructors for many years in both national and international courses organized by institutions such as the State Hydraulic Works under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Provincial and District Directorates of Agriculture and Forestry, Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) Regional Development Administration, Menemen International Agricultural Research and Training Center Directorate, Irrigation Unions, Development Agencies, Chambers of Agricultural Engineers, and Chambers of Agriculture.

The department's faculty members are consistently engaged in research projects. Up to this date, a total of 15 applied research projects have been carried out, with 12 funded from national public resources and the remaining 3 supported by TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey).
