The department focuses on different studies of Horticultural Sciences in terms of teaching and research. Undergraduate courses aim to provide students with sufficient and basic knowledge in horticulture studies; namely, viticulture, fruit, vegetable and ornamental plant sciences.

The Department of Horticulture helps graduate students to enhance their knowledge, gain practical experience on applicable methodologies, and conduct researches on newly developed areas by offering advanced level courses and assistance in their thesis. In addition, the department provides students with opportunities in planning, managing, and evaluating research projects. Furthermore, one of the goals of the graduate program is to improve the local economy through supporting the local farmers and businessmen by targeting local agricultural problems in selection of graduate thesis topics. By the recently approved project by DPT, production of vegetable seedlings, vineyard and fruit rootstock will be realized. This will enable to provide the requirement seedlings and nursery of Diyarbakır province.

            Facilities

The department has recently established a biotechnology laboratory open to all students in the Faculty of Agriculture building. In addition to commonly used laboratory equipments and materials, there are sterile bench and growth and acclimatization units used for micro propagation. The department has a collection of 10 tempered zone fruits planted on an 80-da area and a vineyard, especially composed of early table grape cultivar, covering 15 da area.

            Main research areas

The research areas of the department include the species which are currently on market and those which can potentially be on market in the fields of viticulture, fruit, and vegetable and ornamental plant sciences.

           Viticulture

For the perspective of modern viticulture, researches can be conducted on species used for table use, raisin and wines. In addition, experiments can be performed on production of open rooted and grafted of vine bag seedlings by combining American Vine Rootstocks in different ways.

           Fruit Science

Studies can be conducted on temperate zones (those with pome and stone fruits and those with shells) and subtropical fruits and their rootstocks. The setup and cost of orchard including dwarf and semi dwarf fruit can be studied as well.

           Vegetable Science

Different studies can be considered on growing of open field vegetables (summer and winter vegetables), and covered vegetables (low and high plastic tunnels and glass greenhouses). In addition, scientific, technical and technological studies can conducted on production of vegetable seedlings.

            Ornamental Plants

A variety of researches can be conducted in the fields of cut flower, interior and exterior decorative plants and flower bulbs.
