Dicle University, Faculty of Agriculture was founded in 1992 in Diyarbakır. Diyarbakır is located in the Southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey. Climatic condition of this region is semi-arid, mild, rainy winters and dry, hot summers. Diyarbakır has an important role in Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) due to its fertile and large plains where will be irrigated by the project. Economy of the province is generally based on agriculture.  Currently dry farming is conducted with annual cropping; however with development of the GAP project irrigated land will be increased which will enable farmers to diversify crops and result in yield increments.

The first undergraduate study started in 1993 at the Department of Field Crops. Since then other three departments (Plant Protection, Horticulture and Animal Science) were opened. University has 2700 ha of land which is suitable for irrigated and dry farming.  Master of Science studies are offered by four departments (Animal Science, Field Crops, Horticulture and Plant Protection). In the Faculty, there are 3 professors, 6 associate professors, 15 assistant professors, 16 research assistants and 1 lecturer who have been contributing to the research and education studies in the departments. In order to educate undergraduate and graduate students in a better way, recent efforts have been devoted to benefit from EU education and exchange programmes like SOCRATES/ERASMUS.

The Faculty has been conducting applied research involving the development of new cultivars using molecular to conventional breeding methods, propagation of these new cultivars. Our faculty research activities are focused on agronomy, plant breeding, plant protection, animal science, soil science, plant nutrition, agricultural machinery, water management and fertigation. The combination of these disciplines has created a capacity to address sustainable agriculture and provide solutions for regional agricultural problems. In addition to teaching and research activities, all faculty members act as consultants and provide suggestions to the local farmers and also the private sectors. One of the faculty missions in research is to initiate collaborative research projects at national and international levels. Recently there are several projects financially supported by TUBITAK, DPT, EU and ongoing collaborative research projects with ICARDA and GAP Administration. The faculty members organized national congresses and meetings.
