Dicle University was founded on the eastern side of region and named after the river Tigris which gave life to the soils it meandered through the Mesopotamia, the cradle of great civilisations. On the western side of the river lies the historical city, Diyarbakir . The Faculty of Medicine, which was opened in 1966 as a part of Ankara University, forms the nucleus of the present Dicle University . With the opening of the Faculty of Art and Sciences in 1974, Dicle University was officially founded including two faculties. Then with the participation of the Faculty of Dentistry in 1976 and of the Faculty of Agriculture in 1981 Diyarbakir University continued its development. The name “ Diyarbakir University ” was changed to “ Dicle University ” in 1982. The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, The Faculty of Law, The Faculty of Education, 3 Graduate Schools and 5 Schools were opened as the new institutions of the University. Today, there are 11 Faculties, 4 Schools, 11 Vocational Schools, 3 Graduate Schools, 1 State Conservatory, 8 Research and Application Centres under the administration of Dicle University. Dicle University, being at the centre of GAP, which is one of the greatest development projects of the Middle- East and the world, with its Faculties, Schools, and Research Centres expanded over the region ,has taken over the responsibility of growing up the qualified vocational staff that will be needed in the project; of making contributions to the social, cultural and economic development of the region. So as to carry out the needs of this historical responsibility adequately, Dicle University has entered into a rapid development process for both education -teaching, health and research, and for social and cultural activities aimed for the region
